Attention! WARNING FOR AMERICAN TOURISTS! There is no Walmart, no McDonalds and no Starbuck on St.Michel. The tide comes and goes in the natural rhythm and cannot be influenced by anybody. Moreover it is muddy and on highest tide WET around St.Michel. And the most important thing for American tourists: There is nobody you can complain to or hold responsible for it.

What I love most about some of your videos is your willingness to learn, and your honest curiosity. If more people lived that way, I'm sure the world would be a better place. Loved this one too.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3o7EpdLnlk&t=302">5:02</a> welcome to the civilised world, where we still plant trees knowing we will never enjoy their shade. It's how you progress a society.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3o7EpdLnlk&t=685">11:25</a> The reason the land is that way is due to hundreds of years of water erosion. Low speed water likes to snake around like that.

Huge cathedrals like this used to take 200-400 years to build..<br>So 150 years for this is not that bad, considering the majority of it it is done by hand..

Religion in Europe: "We build this monument to God and his creation to stand for eternity"<br><br>Religion in the US: "Daddy needs his third private jet, Jebus told me in a dream. I'll take cash or cards"

Schools should talk more about the dark side of wars. Not the just flashy, heroic things, but the real dark stuff like this village

If people realized that "think of working your entire life for something that you will never see finished" is exactly what every one of us is supposed to do with everything in life from building friendships, building cities and building countries, this world would be a better place.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3o7EpdLnlk&t=311">5:11</a> for most creative people, the journey is far more interesting than the destination. Gaudi saw the end-result in his mind, anyway.

There is a reason why the Sagrada Familia was not completed in a few years, an important but little-known reason. From its beginning, the Sagrada Familia was financed with private donations and income from visitors. Gaudí sought state or ecclesiastical finance to maintain the independence of the project and his wish that the works be financed with donations and offerings continued to be respected.

Not bad for Oradour Sur Glane.<br>I've been there 3 times. The emotions you feel (especially as a French man, I can relate alot more I guess?) are overwhelming. Yes, this place can make you cry, and there's no shame in it.<br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3o7EpdLnlk&t=1605">26:45</a> : the signs says "Here, place of torment; A group of men was massacred and burned by the Nazis. Remember them" (last line is... hard to translate? It literally says "gather your though" or "Meditate" with a religious undertone, but I can't find an exact equivalent in English)<br>And next to it : "6 men escaped this barn"<br><br>For the sign at the exit, it's hard to explain but the sign in French doesn't use the typical "formal you" (that you see on other signs like the "Recueillez-vous" ) but the informal you "Souviens-toi". It's... powerful. It talking directly to each person that reads it. It's not a vague "You all must remember this" but more like "You personnally must remember". It's a very unusual thing on French memorials and french signs in general.<br><br>For a bit more context, after WWII, people didn't really knew what to do about the village ruins, so eventually they set it up as a kind of "timed-out memorial" with the idea that they would leave nature slowly "eat away" the ruins until there would be nothing recognizable, that would be a signal of forgiveness. Then at some point in the 70's, the new generations changed their mind about how to deal with the trauma of WWII and the village was "frozen" with the ruins maintained, "fixed". Several items were moved in a museum nearby as well.<br>Note that about 30 people escaped the massacre. The last of them, Robert Hébras, died in 2023 aged 97.<br><br>Thanks for your great-grand-father's service.
