I love how you truly delve into what makes the show's bad episodes bad. A decade ago there was so much low-effort criticism, and it feels like these days a lot of people have overcompensated by avoiding criticizing the show at all. You do a good job of pointing out the legitimate issues with these types of episodes in a more constructive way.

To be fair, regarding One Coarse Meal, it’s possible Plankton doesn’t know Pearl’s breed doesn’t eat plankton; to him, whales are whales. Besides, Pearl did say she prefers salad over plankton.

I'd say it's an episode that relies on character torture without a sense of catharsis or justification.

Im suprised that “Pet Sitter Pet” didn’t make it to the list. Its worse then APFG, because Gary is tormented by PATRICK, his CAREGIVER!

The main problem with "a pal for Gary " is that it feels like a test. It's testing the level of obliviousness that SpongeBob can reasonably show. When this same level of obliviousness is exactly what Patrick's character is for. Prior to this episode, SpongeBob is shown to meticulously care for EVERYTHING in his environment. He tends a garden, goes to each of his friend's houses one by one to ask if they need help, is the only on the clock cook at the krusty krab, does community service, taste tests Gary's food! Yet can't tell when Gary is feeling any negative emotion or when he's in danger?

It's a shame about Stuck in The Wringer, 'cause I can see two ways you could make that episode work; in either regard, you shouldn't have Patrick use the forever glue, but one is where Spongebob would try really hard to stay positive and go about his day normally, but gets beaten down by the wringer getting in the way, until he finally acknowledges that he's sad and cries about it, which leads to him getting out, the moral being about the importance of feeling your feelings instead of hiding them away, sometimes you need a good cry about something. The other would follow the original episode more closely, mainly being about Patrick trying to cheer up Spongebob, though again Patrick wouldn't be to blame for the wringer predicament, and thus when Spongebob blows up at Patrick, it does feel undeserved because Patrick was really just trying to help cheer up Spongebob, and the moral would be about not taking bad moods out on your friends

Fun fact: it’s rumored that even the voice actors admitted that they did not like how one coarse meal turned out. Especially Clancy Brown, who claimed to have felt rather uncomfortable when reading his own lines.

9:50 That specific clip of Squidward and the scallop always gets me. I was in a psychiatric ward as a teenager, and one morning we put on Spongebob on the TV in the main room. That episode and that clip was the one that played in front of a bunch of teenagers in a psych ward. I still remember one of the adults scrambling to go "And that's why Squidward should go to therapy and get help for his depression!"

Good example of "bad thing happening to animal to make a statement" is Dio first kicking Danny the dog, and then killing him as revenge. The author Araki loves dogs, so he has Dio to the worst thing he can think of, hurt a dog, to show how evil Dio is.

I tip my hat to you cause I honestly don’t know how you got through most of these episodes. It’s so sad and infuriating looking back on these previous episodes cause it just makes you wonder why the writers threw in the towel the way they did.

Great review as always! 👏🏾

I always thought Gone was such a weird episode. And it's annoying because it had the potential to actually be interesting if plot was something like Spongebob having to pay detective to find out what happened to everyone. Or going on a journey to find them. Instead we get Spongebob basically deciding that he'll just stay alone and pretend to be everyone (which just feels ooc), with the reveal that everyone left to celebrate a holiday about avoiding him. Even worse, his reaction to finding this out is a 2 second comedic crying scene before immediately shifting to them repeating the same thing to Patrick. Which is also bizarre because why would Spongebob and Patrick even participate in these respective "holidays" about abandoning their best friend???

5:38 as someone with depression (and slight memory problems which Depression can actually somewhat cause)

It can actually be hard to remember happy memories as opposed to the bad ones which always stick with you

So you actually can have happy days and yet later on be left wondering if you’ve ever had any. Part of the sickness of Depression is making it harder for you to embrace those happy memories
