Meet the Moldbeards :)

This video is a bit quick and different to what I normally do, but don't worry, higher quality tales are coming again next year. I'm getting over a pretty bad cold so excuse the stuffy, monotonous narration! Let me know what you think of the Moldbeards, and be sure to leave a comment sharing a bit about the dwarves in your world, if you have any.

Hope you liked the little homage to Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part One at the start of the lore. Funny story; the quote that opens that movie ("Dreams are messages from the deep"), was actually the seed that started this whole idea of dwarves and dreams and mold. I was trying to think of all the things it could possibly mean and it somehow lead me to the Moldbeards hahah. Inspiration works in strange ways sometimes. Sorry if this video ended up being a bit too esoteric, much like Dune. In hindsight it might be a bit vague and strange at times. I'll try to dial that down in the future, making things more understandable for everyone, even those of you who might not have seen every video.

I'll be taking some time off until the new year, so I want to wish you all very happy holidays!

See you in 2026 :)

Rick

this is fascinating; I like that most of the mold beards want their bodies in the earth but their souls in the sky

This reimagining of dwarves is incredible! I love that the mold beards farm/domesticate bats, I’ve never seen someone do that in their world building.

The mouldbeards are unsettling in all the right ways. Tumiun seems to hit that world building sweet spot every single time

I love when fantasy writers actually do proper hard fantasy and not "weird looking humans with quirks or magic". It's the fantasy equivalent of sci-fi creators going all in like the Heptapods from Arrival or the Cloverfield monsters, and I love it. It's so unique and inhuman and mind-bendingly cool in their own unique ways.

I noticed you said that the moldbeards originally dreamt of the voice of the moldmother calling to them... I'm thinking back to your magic system video where you mentioned that magical creation isn't always deliberate, and I'm wondering if the moldbeards created their own god, in the same way that real people trapped in caves will begin to imagine light and sound. I'm sure they didn't have anywhere else for their magical creativity to go.

This is my favorite version of Dwarven culture I've seen. I love that you center the stereotypical environment of these races, suffusing it in their culture and being without making them literally elementals, all the while mixing in your own twists and creative choices for real world inspirations.

The vocal performances here are insane. The troll voices remind me of the Board of Control.

I LOVE the originality of this! It’s beautiful! Question out of curiosity: do they marry and have children? What do genders and reproduction look like for this race and has it changed?

I am in LOVE with the dwarves in my world. They are honestly pretty basic, BUT I made some tweeks, namely that dwarves reproduce exclusively in sets of twins. The first two sets of twins (Orin the Anvil and Elgrin Dawnhammer, Ransvior Fireforge and Wenslohr the Temperer) were Made by one of the first men who later became corrupted and unleashed the first evils on the world. This corrupting of the dwarves Forgefather was so devastating that it drove them into the depths of the mountains where they continue to live a fierce and kinda race, though distrustful and reserved.

During the war that followed the corruption of the one who formed them, the dwarves finally joined the forces against their forgefather, and in great anguish and grief turned the tide of the battle and dealt the final blow against him. The dwarves carried his body beneath the mountains to burry and mourn him…

Marriage is rare because of the bonds between twins, but it is greatly celebrated and holds a place of honor. Families are large and clannish, and I am playing with idea of magical tattoos being a part of their culture because they are the most skilled race in craft magic, imbuing and infusing magic into made things.

I love the twin aspect because it’s in homage to my best friends twin babies 🥰

Incredible. Endstones is such a fascinating concept. What's going to happen with the current accumulation of endstones? And the Mouldbeards/deep dreamers; there's several books worth of stories and lore just waiting to be revealed! Definitely excellent for an rpg.

This video is amazing. One of the ways I judge a fantasy world is by how much it gets my imagination going. There are so many stories to be made from this world! Top notch.
