What's Going On With "The GMOD Stream"?

maybe the reason for the images popping in is a representation of their online "personas". profile pictures, memes and reaction images they use on the regular, the tiny little fractions of who they are that they've chosen to present distilled down into a couple of images. there's probably plenty of people who've had a really rough online friendship with someone who always referenced a very specific thing from a piece of media, and even if you aren't a fan of that media you can't look at it without those sour memories popping up in your head

So the moral of the story is. “Don’t make friends online or a red G-Man will kill you” understood.

7:52 - I love how, without directly saying it, the person writing this is brushing this off as Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. It's when you think of something and become consciously aware of it. Like, if you start thinking about the number 333 you'll probably see it in the little time stamp of a thumbnail, the view count, anywhere. It's also nice that this entity is initially easy to brush off, of course you're not going to be worried about a character becoming more prominent in thumbnails or social media posts, your brain is trying to look for them.

for me, at least, there was always a hint of desperation in my online friendships. we were all queer, mentally ill young teens, and for a lot of my friends, the internet was all they had. there's an intensity that comes from other online teens being your only mental health support, the only people you really talk to. but that intensity came more from a deep need to be seen than from a stable, trusting relationship, so it all fell apart quite easily in the end. some of the people i felt like i could be friends with forever walked out of my life in the span of one afternoon. the desperation to have A friend was often stronger than the need to have me specifically as a friend.

Fucking insane how the game that gave us Doritos race wars also can give us MULTIPLE video essay worthy horror projects. Gmod is THE sandbox of all time.

12:02 I don't recognize all of these comic panels, but Kaguya and Mokou stand out as they're (in the canon of Touhou Project) immortals who have fought each other for centuries due to a past aggression. In fandom though, they're usually written as enemies to lovers.

The GMOD stream is somehow a story about dysphoria, online friendships, autism, loneliness, horror and love all wrapped up into a 90 minute stream. It is unironcally a masterpiece and will live rent free in my head as a true standout piece of media. There is truly, nothing else like it.

For me, The Red Man is less so a symbol for the dark side of net friendships and moreso a living embodiment of the type of dissonance you get when the people you're closest too are also people you have never, or will ever, meet face to face. I watched the gmod stream about a month after it's release, not long after I booked a flight too see my partner (previously best friend of 6 years), and the sadness that pervaded the stream over the connection that could have been made lingered with me for weeks and months; arguably to this day. For me it was the story of the neocities author and Crystal's adolescent love, the gang's despair over not getting to meet, that really struck me as the heart the thematic heart of the story. The Red Man is a conduit by which people can, in an obviously destructive way, digitally cross the divide that cannot be crossed physically. While the abuse of Patty at the end is obvious (the verbal abuse over fucking drakengard of all things), I do generally see a lot of the last third as less an attempt at excluding her, and more an attempt to gesture towards how to join them. Plus, she Is the only one who can be a victim to the normal gmod shennanigans; Jess and Star feel pain whenever their characters die. I feel like the final act revolves around murdering Patty because ultimately that is what has to happen for the three of them to be "together". She's definitely singled out, but I feel like it's a lot more about a misguided attempt to bring her "into the fold"; both as trying to inundate her with oldhead gamer experiences and also drag her into the dataspace, where emotional and physical distance cease to be an issue.

All that aside: great video. The Gmod Stream is my favorite web horror project ever and its awesome to see someone give it the time of day.
