This is the true story of the Banco Río heist in Acassuso, Buenos Aires — January 13th, 2006 — where a gang held 300 police officers, snipers, and six hours of live national television in a siege around a building they had already walked out of, eighteen metres underground, in rubber boats. At seven in the evening, an officer opened the last locked door in the branch. There was nobody there. No man in a grey suit. No gang. No hostages. At half past eight, behind a filing cabinet on the floor below, someone found a hole in the wall — fifty centimetres by thirty — and a tunnel dropping into the storm drains under the street. Inside the vault, 143 safe-deposit boxes stood open. Five toy guns and three grenades lay on the floor. And taped to the wall, a note: in a neighbourhood of rich people, without weapons or hard feelings, it's only money — not love. It began in 2004, on a psychoanalyst's couch, when a 38-year-old artist named Fernando Araujo said five words out loud for the first time: I'm going to rob a bank. He had no criminal record, no relatives with one, an engineering and physics background, a martial arts practice, a painting technique he invented, and one rule kept since he was eighteen — replica weapons only. His insight was the thing the whole case turns on. A bank is never protected for both states at once. At night the vault is sealed and the sensors are live; during business hours the vault stands open and the night system is off. So he didn't dig a tunnel to get in. He dug one to get out — walk in the front door in daylight, take the building, empty the vault at leisure, and vanish underground while police were still setting up outside. That turned the robbery into a timing problem: 30 minutes for the elite Grupo Halcón to arrive, then up to four hours of negotiation before anyone forces the door — provided the man inside stays calm, releases hostages, and hurts nobody. Then they stole the one document that mattered most, and they stole it before the robbery: the actual hostage-negotiation doctrine the tactical unit is trained on. The protocol designed to defeat them was reverse-engineered into their getaway plan. They found the storm drains by asking a municipal drainage worker, then walked into the Palace of Public Sanitation posing as a professor of urbanism and were handed the maps of the entire zone. They dug for months in a concrete conduit with no radio and no mobile signal, where a storm could drown them. When a drill rod jammed through the pavement of a public street in daylight, one of them borrowed a German Shepherd puppy and walked it back and forth over the spot while another crouched to patch the tile. They picked Friday because the courts don't sit for two days after. They picked half past twelve because at that hour the sun reflects off the branch windows into a sniper's eyes. They ordered six fugazzeta pizzas as the withdrawal signal — because fuga is the Spanish word for escape. Three hundred officers took the order. And Araujo wrote one more thing into the plan a year in advance: the audience. Not the police — the public. People have to identify with us, he said, so that once it gets out, they say the thieves are geniuses. The lovable-genius reputation these men still enjoy twenty years later isn't something that happened to them.
