  Personally, having attended Murrayfield tests since the start of the 1970s and having witnessed the glorious breakouts of Andy Irvine (when he caught the ball), the languid class and poise of John Rutherford and the deft skills of Gregor Townsend, I have never so enjoyed watching Scotland as I have while Finn Russell has been at no.10. Watching Scotland has been mostly entertaining, seeing boldness in style and often quite brilliant, all in a way possibly unmatched in the national team’s history, though I can’t really speak for its first hundred years! Russell has been at the heart of that. Being brilliant at times doesn’t equate to winning tournaments and is probably as much as we can hope for. Anyone who knows the game in Scotland will surely concede that for all the outstanding performances and periods within games, we do not have quite such a good 23-man squad in a professional world where we’re competing against too many better resourced nations. Indeed, look beneath the national team and I think it punches above its weight. So I’ll be pleased for lots of reasons if Finn stays fit and keen!

  That blow-up with Toonie back in 2020 was the making of Russell. He grew up, decided what was important to him, and also helped Toonie become a better man manger. He’s been just fantastic consistently since then. Just a top top guy and a joy to watch. He’s closer to the end of his career so I’m going to enjoy every moment. Just a wonderful guy to watch play the game. And he’s a Scot!!!!!!

  the one thing I always think about Finn is when he co commented on BbC Alba when injured. How he spoke about the game described a different understanding which he was then able to translate on to the pitch and having sat next to his dad during one of his early caps it was clear this had the weight of a generational knowing
