Roger Gracie said it took him ~3 years working on the cross choke from mount before he could finish it with consistency. People (including me) give up on new moves way too quickly.

I’m distracted by what looks like the world’s smallest staircase to the left and above your head.

If there's one thing to remember from this video, it's the Movement Ladder (4:30), a progressive system designed to help you effectively learn and integrate Jiu-Jitsu moves into your game by incrementally increasing the stakes of your practice environment, from low-resistance drilling to live rounds against various opponents.

I was actually eating spaghetti as I watched this video. 😂 I wish I would have had this video available to me years ago. It took me about a year to come to these similar ideas on my own and with my coaches' advice. I was the lowest rung at my gym for a while, and I'm median build, but most of my training partners close to my skill level were 20+ lbs heavier than me. Let's just say my first couple of years were a grind.

I F'ing knew it!

I implemented this kind of learning all on my own. I was encouraged to roll with higher belts and I actively resisted doing that because indeed, trying out stuff and getting blocked, submitted, or swept at every turn just gets you discouraged. You will keep chasing and trying out new things just so you can find a kink in the higher belt's armor, but this will be like chasing your own tail, and you will have wasted time.

They will say that that is how you learn things, and I strongly disagree; this is how the higher belts keep sharpening by practicing on you .
Or you get a lecture about "ego" and letting go, because you hate losing every single time .

No, this is the way! Find the technique that fits you, read up or watch instructionals on it so you can rewatch the thing that you are going to try, try it out during the lessons (I do), then take a lower belt and don't go all out balls out; I don't submit lower lighter belts. They can have some advantage, and I will try my escape or whatever thing I am working on.

And yes, lastly, try it out on same weight-same belt. Because the truth of it, how much we want it to be all self defence-y, in competition that is what you will fight against. I hardly ever go against people out weighing me by 10+ kilos, especially so if they are higher belts. It is a recipe for getting hurt and learning absolutely zilch! UNLESS they know how to roll with someone lighter, which a lot of people don't know how to do. This means saying NO to some people and hurting some egos, but it is you, your learning, and your health on the line.

Never got hurt too bad, joints and knees intact, and learning tons and tons.

Thank you, it is very useful confirming my idea of efficient learning in jiu-jitsu.
As a very light and old person was a great help of my progression (especially on the top) when I started to teach, especially girls - it helped me master some of the moves which I normally never encountered during live sparring and when I rarely did I fucked up due to lack of skills missing the middle part of the ladder you introduce in the video.

Been getting a lot out of these videos as a brown thank you. My version of this was "progressive overload""= increase in skill &/or weight as opposed to more specifics- e.g. one of the rungs being greater skill less weight.

if you could- please turn your mic up like 5-10%. The ads are considerably louder than you :')

Another awesome video!

I spent my first 10 years in BJJ in side control top or bottom… let’s just say I’m a slow learner!

The last 6 years have been better but bad habits are hard to reverse!

Fully agree with your approach to learning. I read hundreds of investing/personal development books…

And didn’t retain any info…
