  Colette, as a published craft and home decor project designer, I can tell you that decoupage wrinkles are caused by the paper fibers absorbing moisture at different rates. Your technique works because you are not applying moisture to the napkin! You are, in effect, laminating the paper with heat to the dry mod podge. Terrific solution. Another way is to coat the paper with a layer of clear acrylic spray (like Krylon). This isolates/seals the fibers so they can't absorb moisture at all. Then you could use Mod Podge and you won't get wrinkles (give it a try sometime). So glad you are sharing your method.
