The Sound of Music won 5 Oscars: Best Picture and Best Director, both to Robert Wise; Best Sound, to James Corcoran and Fred Hynes; Best Film Editing, to William Reynolds; and Best Music, Scoring of Music (adaptation or treatment), to a self-taught conductor, Irwin Kostal. Born in Chicago, he taught himself music at a local library. He said no college taught what he really wanted to do, and his family couldn't afford it. He had already worked with Robert Wise on West Side Story; and with Julie Andrews (whose October 1 birthday he shared) on Mary Poppins, and before that on several record albums and TV shows. In SOM he showed great sensitivity toward the kids throughout the movie, very evident in the way he ran the very powerful (32 pieces) orchestra while the kids were singing. He always deftly keyed his power to their varying degrees of exuberance or sadness, and neevr let the orchestra overpower them.

I hate to tell you but Maria von Trapp visited the set of the movie during filming. She met Julie Andrews and she even appeared in the background as an extra.

This is definitely a classic family film. Family first. Extraordinary everything else but the connections between family members were and continue to be handed down, a thankfully timeless story

God bless the teams of people who put this together. What a successful and lovely gift to us all and to generations to come. ❤
