It sounds like the Queen of Spades caught a fungal infection. It might be the reason why she kept on eating her brood to regain energy to fight of the infection which is why when she died she was covered in white fungus.

It’s very unlucky and it’s something out of control of us ant keepers sadly.

My C. scutellaris workers died in a similar fashion after feeding them a grape. Only the queen survived. My theory is the workers directly consume the grape and then feed the queen secondarily, possibly diluting the exposure to pesticides for her. Makes you rethink what kind of food we ourselves are eating...

First of all, I want to thank you for your enthusiasm in making videos about ants. This is truly meaningful for the community of ant keepers. I will share some experiences that I think you may find useful.

1. You should only buy single queen ants when you already have many ant colonies, I think around 5 to 10. This means you will spend more time watching your existing large colonies rather than being curious about single queen ants. Single queens should only be checked once a month. This is a mistake that beginners often make, including myself.

2. I only feed my ants sugar water and crickets bought from pet food stores because I can ensure they are clean. Sugar water should not be as thick as honey because early-generation workers are usually quite small and weak, making them easily trapped in thick honey. I never dare to feed my ants human food or insects I catch in the wild.

3. Fully claustral queen ants will often "forget" how to take care of their eggs once they have workers, as it is no longer their duty. As a result, losing all workers in a colony usually leads to a 90% chance of death. However, for the remaining 10%, we can save the colony through "boosting." This means taking pupae or cocoons of the same species or the same genus and placing them in the test tube with the queen, hoping they will hatch and replace the lost workers.

4. I don't think it's a good idea to use a cotton swab with a wet tip to pick up an egg, I'd use soft tweezers.

5. I am from Southeast Asia and currently living in Europe. I have done some research and found that honeypot ants and CA02 are two difficult species for beginners. You should choose easier species to start ant keeping. In my hometown, there are "unkillable" species that are very easy to raise and can adapt to all environmental conditions, such as:

- Camponotus nicobarensis
- Camponotus irritans
- Camponotus parius
- Camponotus albosparsus

I believe that out of 100 people who keep these species, only 1 or 2 would fail. I think there are similar easy species in the U.S. as well.

The above are just my personal opinions, and I do not claim to be absolutely right, as every ant keeper will have different experiences. I hope this helps you and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Thank you for this bro, most of the ant channels I watch don't show the difficulty of having ants. They never show the sadness of copies that fail, thank you bro

Evertime I watch a video about ants and ant keeping my brain just refreshes the thought of "ants are nature's pikmin." again and again in my mind.

40:50

So true. This happens a lot with young colonies. As the queen doesn’t actually have control over the workers, often the workers will won’t do make one decision but the queen doesn’t so they’ll often have minor disputes over decisions
