I grew up with a milk cow in the family. We had an electric churn and made our own butter when I was little. When the cow died I could tell the difference in butter immediately on the switch to grocery store butter. The difference in milk was even bigger.

Costco's butter, labelled under their Kirkland brand, is actually 100% grass-fed butter from New Zealand. So, if you're looking for a high quality, dark yellow, rather than pale cream-coloured butter, that genuinely is pure unadulterated butter, then give Kirkland brand a go.

It cost my Grandmother more than a few pennies to make butter: she had to raise and feed cows, milk the cows, skim the cream from the milk and churn it into butter. I cannot remember how much butter she made but she formed it into one pound cakes made from a butter mold, wrapped it in waxed paper, and then sold it to a small grocery store in town. It was a project.

Old retired man here from the Southeast USA.

Interesting video. I do have some store bought butter, but I just recently started buying Heavy cream and making my own Butter. I just made some Butter a few days ago. I froze it because I won't be using it anytime soon.

One bad thing about making it yourself is the butter won't last long. You have to freeze some unless you use a lot.

I've also been making it the Hard way. I put a pint of heavy cream in a quart jar and shake it. Takes about 45 minutes, but I think it's worth it. I know what I have and get a little exercise while watching the news.

I encourage you to try it yourself. If you have kids, let each one shake it for a few minutes and pass the jar around. Great learning experience too.

.

Quit watching after you told us about Land O'Lakes. Just came from the market, it says cream and salt on my package.

When I was growing up, we had one Jersey cow what produced between 6-7 gallons of milk a day. We skimmed most of the cream off and made our own butter. It did not take anywhere near the amount of milk they are saying it does in this video to make a pound of butter. The cream was warmed to room temperature before churning as that made it churn faster. The buttermilk was strained off and used in cooking or fed to the chickens or pigs. Butter is a very simple thing to make without any fancy equipment. That one cow kept our family, and several others, in milk, cream, butter, and ice cream.

Vital Farms has been busted for selling eggs that are not what they state on their cartons. I would not trust them for any product. This information is somewhat correct, but hearing you recommend Vital Farms just made me question who is paying for this ad for them. I only use Kirkland butter that is exactly like Kerri gold (and probably is).

I grew up in Oregon. My family of 8 took a family "field trip" to Tillamook, Oregon, when I was in my early teens, and took the Tillamook tour of their cheese-making operation. I now live in California but have continued to buy Tillamook dairy products because I know that they use real ingredients. The Tillamook County Creamery Association is a farmer-owned cooperative, and those farmers and their families care about providing the best product possible. I especially love their Tillamook cheese bricks, and their ice creams are fabulous, but all their products are stellar.

Here is the real difference that matters: The healthiest butter is generally considered to be organic, grass-fed butter, such as Kerrygold or Organic Valley, because it is richer in omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and vitamins A and E compared to grain-fed dairy. Hope you find this helpful.
