It was a strange and complicated form of it but still it worked which is why they are all carrying ropes and passing them along.

  Sin eating sounds a lot like an unwanted Santa Claus. Some random dude comes in your house, drinks your beer, eats your bread, and leaves after gifting you closure that your dead relative is no longer going to hell

  You forgot to mention that the worst part about being a garden hermit was that you had to do the job even when the owners of the property went on vacation. Needless to say, the job was so dreadful and lonely that most hermits quit before they ever reached their seven year quota and in one case, a hermit was fired after three weeks for getting caught drinking in a local pub.
