Based on movie dates, this feels like it might have started as a kids movie, but couldn't get funding for reshoots until they agreed to reworking it into a horror movie to try to rode the success of the Child's Play franchise (the third movie of which was already over 2 years old by the time this released).

the "Red Baron," was likely shot down by Australian ground fire, most likely Sergeant Cedric Popkin, while flying low over the Somme on April 21, 1918. While Canadian Captain Roy Brown was officially credited with the kill, medical analysis suggests a ground-fired bullet caused the fatal wound.
