100% agree that we should be focusing on why some autistic people are thriving and the different between them and those that are barely surviving each day. I suspect it is simple (😅) as having an environment, autonomy, support, joy and heavy reduction in demands. Modern society doesn't really allow that so to fix it we have to look at fixing artificially ingrained societal beliefs, that people aren't rigid cogs in a machine but are living breathing creatures that need to flow.

I find that very facinating when he talks about estrogen and testosterone maybe having an impact on the unborn baby in pregnancy. I am a late diagnosed AuDHD woman, I have 6 children who are all either diagnosed or self diagnosed, one is non verbal at 13 yo, and the others have various struggles in adult life. I am at the age now where i have started HRT, and I am on estrogen and testosterone only, after trying 7 different types of progesterone I had to give up on trying any more because it makes me so sick, like literally bedridden when I am on it. I have heard other people in the ADHD/Autism community also have similiar experiences with progestine based medication, or hormonal contraceptives throughout their lives. Research is now happening on ADHD women and progesterone part of HRT because so many react to it like me. Things that make you go Hmmm...

Stress has to be a huge factor in longevity. As well as gastro issues all my life I now have a heart disease that has a big tie to stress. I was diagnosed as AuADHD at 70. I have struggled with suicidal thoughts most of my life.

I think what needs to be understood is out of the population diagnosed with autism, how many of these cases are severe enough that the person is unable to move out of their parents home, start a family, and support themselves socially and financially; from which we could then compare these findings with a non-controlled group. Moreover, we could repeat this study in other societies with various levels of modern technologies and modern living standards. I think it is possible that more and more people are unable to adapt to the technological age we live in, and this is preventing more people from becoming self-sufficient. Perhaps this should be looked at.

I do so wish that researchers would focus on the mental health challenges Autistic people face. That’s the thing that has spoiled life for the Autists in my family. None of us have learning disabilities and as women we can handle the social side of life well enough. It has been the anxiety and depression which has nearly broken us, and threatened our lives and financial stability, making life far more difficult.
I know primary research into causes can feed into better treatments, but I’d love to see a concerted effort made to identify the existing treatments, drugs and therapies, which really work for us, and make that advice available to GPs so they can quickly address our mood problems.

I would like to volunteer for research studies of that gap in knowledge about autism in women at menopause.

I'm yet undiagnosed but certain that autism and ADHD are the basis for many of my physical differences, gynaecological/menopausal/gastroenterological and not least psychological. I'm now 60 and cannot seem to make myself understood, or feel validated when attending for healthcare with multiple issues that I'm certain are all inter-related and particular to my neuro divergence

Please find a guest who can take about hormones and autism, I'm late diagnosed at 54 and started HRT 15 months ago and still trying to get the right dose. Doctors have no idea

I like Simon Baron Cohen. He’s had some unfair criticism by some autistic people who have made erroneous assumptions about his research motives. I was diagnosed in 2010 and found some of his books really helpful.

Being ND I created a spectrum. 1. Profound disability, 2. Medium functioning, and 3.High functioning... ...I was the middle one. I am 74 years old now. Had many and varied jobs, with periods of unemployment. I am a poet and a letter writer. I undertook desperate measures to try and have a good life. In recent years taking a breathing function test- and remedying my childhood breathing patterns took away my suicidal thoughts. Better late than never... ...I had a persistent dry cough. With my breathing I coughed up heaps of gunk. I swallow this, even now, and believe that it helps to line my gut... ...as a kid I experienced extreme neglect and got undiagnosed pneumonia... so the old breathing regimen pre-figured this...

As a self diagnosed ASD, ADHD and dyslexic older female with a similar son I am heartbroken that there is no real help to get and maintain employment. What are we supposed to do in this difficult financial environment when we are not recognised as having challenges that are barriers, and not given any real financial help because we are seen as too high functioning? It's a daily struggle to look for hope or to know where to turn, especially when any help finishes at 25, are ASD people supposed to disappear at 25? Any job help for NEETS is not for ASD people and ends even earlier. No wonder we get depressed and anxious.

I hope you read this. There was a character in David Copperfield that had autistic personalities. He was a very loving man that all the students loved. He lived with the aunt. It was written by Charles Dickens. Good description, so it has been over a hundred years and around then
