What an amazing story. And what courage, I certainly wouldn't have been volunteering for that mission.
Thanks to Jason and Woody for bringing this to us

Absolutely brilliant! I believe the quiet part in the background where a few hundred thousand troops being in the wrong place has a huge impact, but it is impossible to measure. The same with stragetic bombing where 80% of German 88s just happen to not be on the eastern front or spare parts not arriving is underestimated in it's impact. Anyways off to buy the book.

I would dispute your assertion at 5:00.

There's a book called Secrets of D-Day by Gilles Perrault, in which Perrault recounts an interview with a Free French officer who had been dropped into France with a deliberately faulty radio in the hope that he would be captured, interrogated and give up Calais as the landing site.

Annoyingly, the fact that Perrault wrote the book in 1964 meant that a lot of people he interviewed were less willing to be named on the record (some were still serving in military or intelligence roles).

Cool story. I mean torture is widely know to be ineffective as an interrogation technique. And it doesnt neccesarily stop, even when verifiably correct information is provided. If a resistance fighter gives up the location of a weapons cache, why stop? maybe he knows of more. Would be interesting to look into how secret operatives were prepared for potential torture psychologically, I'm not an expert, but I dont think confessing anything improves your situation

This mission is referenced in the 70s TV series, Colditz.
