How Many People Could One Fully Automated Farm Feed?

Dawn in Iowa. The tractor is driving itself, the cab is empty. How many mouths can this farm feed? The condition, stated once: 1,000 hectares of prime American farmland — about four square miles — with every human removed. Machines plant, spray, harvest and haul. The only inputs are electricity, diesel, seed, fertiliser and software. Only machines that exist count: John Deere has sold an autonomous 8R since 2022 and widened the family at CES 2025, with its own published target of a full corn-and-soy season by 2030. Yields come from the USDA, calories from the FAO baseline of 2,100 kcal a day. Then the number appears — and immediately grows an asterisk. What's inside: • The rules: which machines are allowed on this farm and which are not • Spring, summer, autumn — what an autonomous fleet actually does across a season • The co-worker nobody can fire: eight to ten weeks of work in a twelve-month calendar • Harvest to calories to fed humans, every step of the chain on screen • The strawberry that breaks the scenario: ~1,000 human hours per acre • Why machines mastered the crops that built civilisation, and stopped there How the number is built: yields, standards and product roadmaps carry their source on screen. The chain from bushels to fed humans is marked ESTIMATE and shown as a formula at every step. A calculation is not a forecast, and this is not a story about machines replacing anyone — it is a story about what they cannot replace. Research, scripting and fact-checking are done by our editorial team, and every figure is verified before it reaches the screen. Documented facts carry their source on screen. Our own numbers are marked ESTIMATE and show the formula behind them, so you always know which figure is sourced and which one is ours. Some visuals are schematics, diagrams or reconstructions created for this video — these are labelled on screen and are not archival footage. #Hypothetical #Agriculture #CostBreakdown
