It was very interesting to find an interview of someone who had left the LCMS to become Roman Catholic. It seems like Megan had scored quite a few home runs with interviews I had seen more recently. So I was wondering what parts of Scripture would be used to refute LCMS doctrine. The sense I got from this interview is that Sam never had a solid understanding of confessional Lutheran doctrine, and was adrift, looking for answers that made the best sense to his way of thinking. Key phrases kept popping up like “It seemed…” “I felt…” “My sense…” etc… rather than “Scripture says…therefore I believe.” It’s beautiful to hear someone say they want to love God as He desires we love Him. I am also glad that Sam is grounded in Christ. However, nothing I heard even started to make me wonder if Roman Catholicism had better doctrine than the LCMS because it was all about how one might think religion ought to be rather than what Scripture tells us.

May God bless Sam, Jacque, and Megan. Glad to be able to listen to this podcast.

Interesting ineterview!
Its only modern day evangelicals that questions whether Roman Catholics are really Christians.
For Lutherans, Roman Catholics are still brethren of the Faith, even Martin Luther himself said that the RC is still a true Church with genuine Christians in it. May we all be one! ✝️
(John 17:20-23)

Just for clarification, Lutherans do teach a distinction between mortal and venial sin. Any of the major Lutheran Dogmatics texts will include a teaching on this issue, in fact it is one of the historic points of division between Lutherans and other Protestant groups. It is unfortunate that Mr. Landon was not taught the Lutheran position on this issue prior to being exposed to the Roman teachings on it, which is indicative of the poor quality of catechesis in many modern LCMS parishes.

I appreciated much of the conversation and Megan’s articulation of justification from a Lutheran perspective. But I was surprised when she said the Lutheran and Roman Catholic views are 'more similar than sometimes we give them credit for.' That statement gives me pause.

The Lutheran Confessions—particularly the Smalcald Articles—are unambiguous: justification by faith alone is the article on which the Church stands or falls. Luther called it non-negotiable, and not for the sake of division, but for the sake of the Gospel. When we blur this distinction, even with good intentions, we risk misrepresenting the confession our churches claim to uphold.

I offer this not to criticize, but in the spirit of genuine helpfulness and concern for clarity. These distinctions matter deeply—not because we seek division, but because the comfort of the Gospel is at stake. I hope this is received as a sincere effort to remain faithful to the confession we share.

It would also be interesting to hear from a Catholic convert to LCMS. There are a large number of them!

I admire Sam's willingness to share on social media with the possible attacks that come. I am also very impressed with the respectful comments that I have read, without seeing any that aren't charitable. I was raised and spent a good portion of my adult life a Roman Catholic. I am now a LCMS Lutheran. I wonder if Sam has read the Book of Concord. I also wonder where he will next land?
