People need to understand that once water is in the ground it behaves completely different then you're picturing it would in your head. I'm a civil engineer and soil mechanics is something i'm very familiar with. Listen the ground you can think of like a layered cake made out of sponge, each layer has a different composition of soil and a different way it interacts with hydro-static water pressure. The top of your soil is the most permeable, 30 inches below it is practically a brick wall that doesn't let water pass, until the entire top layer of soil is completely saturated with ground water. At which point it will stop spreading horizontally and begin traveling through the layer. The point of the french drain is to intercept the water before it leaks down further by giving all that hydro-static pressure a place to relieve itself through the french drain, this is done by identifying where the layers in your particular homes soil seperate, and making sure the place the french drain just below that point, and also it's important to slope the pipe properly, the way water flows in a congregated pipe creates intentional turbulence that keeps the silt from settling to the bottom. If the flow is less then 2-3 degrees you will be cleaning those catchers very regularly.. If you grade it within 2-3 degrees you will never have a drain that clogs, i've had mine in my yard for a decade and have never once had to maintain it in any way.

You're exactly right. It all depends on what type of soil you're dealing with.

The best solution is probably going to be schedule 40 pipe with crushed stone all the way to the surface. Add decorative rock on the surface to make it look a little nicer.

My family owns a $10M landscape and design company and everything he said about the fabric is correct.  He just showed you why.  It’s the better way to do it .  If you choose not to that’s your prerogative but it will be prone to packing the stone which must stay clean for best results.  He never said without fabric it wouldn’t work.  It’s a difference of quality and life of the drain working well

The link for the 6oz fabric is broken, likely not available by the seller. Can you post a new link or more detail description so we can search it ourselves.<br>Thanks
