  Another theory of the sorting hat, does each house have a quota of number of students? For example, is it possible to have a school year of 100 Gryffindor and 0 Hufflepuff? Cultures change after all.

  Just spitballing here, but maybe the sorting hat sees “potential” instead of the exact future? <br>If Harry had gone to Slytherin, he could have had the potential to become Super Evil Guy, which to the hat is roughly equal to being the Chosen One. I don’t think the hat knows the specifics, but can tell that going to either Slytherin or Gryffindor would lead to “greater” outcomes. <br><br>It’s kind of funny to think of the sorting hat as a neutral algorithm that sorts the kids into houses where they can make the biggest impact, whether it’s for good or bad. It also seems a bit more pedagogical than “all evil children must go to the basement” lmaooo

  What do you think about the fact that parents of Muggle born children seem so willing to send their kids off to a magical school without seriously questioning it?<br><br>Imagine being a parent. Your child turns eleven, and suddenly a representative from some unknown society shows up at your home and tells you that your child has magical powers and has been invited to attend a school for witchcraft and wizardry.<br><br>At first, no reasonable person would take any of this seriously. You would probably assume it was a joke, a scam, or that the person was completely insane.<br><br>But suppose they somehow prove that it’s all real. Magic exists, your child really does have magical abilities, and there really is an entire magical society that you’ve never known about.<br><br>Would that actually make the situation less concerning?<br><br>You’re now being asked to send your eleven year old child away to live in a world that exists completely outside the knowledge and protection of the government and society you’ve trusted your entire life. You know almost nothing about this world, its laws, its institutions, or the people who are supposed to protect your child.<br><br>What parent would simply agree to that without seriously questioning it?<br><br>Yet we’re supposed to believe that Muggle parents happily send their children away to some random outlaw school without raising major objections.

  I&apos;m pretty sure the Grangers going to Australia wasn&apos;t retroactively added in by JKR, but was said by Hermione in the final book as a way of making sure that they don&apos;t just forget about her but also entirely disappear so that they are harder to find, thus are being safe
