So glad veteran Collar made it. My Dad's best friend was a navigator for the 453rd Bomb Group also flying that day. His lead ship knew there was a mistake and broke radio silence to call the 445th. The answer from the, lead pilot was that he had had full confidence in his navigator and they would continue. Later the 453rd watched in horror as about 85% of the planes in the 445th were hit and downed. Only a few made it back to England. The next day, 8th air force command pulled planes from all over to fly a mission they labeled as the 445th's mission. In reality there were just a few from the 445th left.

Thanks for uploading these fascinating videos. They show a piece of history which I think gives the public a better understanding of what really happened to the normal soldiers and airmen and what they endured during their time in the war.

The 445th were based at Tibenham.. I live on part of the old US airbase and have just dug out and saved an old Stanton shelter… and am opening it as an Air B&B.. if anyone is interested in staying in a it of history.. feel free to reply to this..

Thank you for sharing this video. I watched it to hear about his prisoner of war experience. I would like to hear more about him being a prisoner of war.
