the few times I have tried this process the metal tape always holds onto the smaller pieces of the veneer. even letting the piece sit for almost 12 hours the tape pulls away pieces of the veneer with it, not sure what I can do to prevent this from happening.

I discovered that aluminum tape trick too! It's insanely good for cutting out tiny parts even if the reason is that you don't want them to fall through the honeycomb bed.
