My experience with bond ETFs is a disaster.

recently bonds went down as well as stocks so bonds are not a safe investment. long term bonds were great from 1980-2020 when interest rates were going down but are bad in increasing interest rate environments. I would not buy any 20 or 30 years bonds better to stick to 30 days to 1 year bonds only in interest rate increasing environment. if you have 2 years money in money market funds then you can ride through the ups and downs of the stock market. Also 5% in gold is good for insurance.

With an interest rate of almost 5% at the bank and inflation below 3%, my 6-month+ safety cushion is doing well.

My take is cash for 5 years of living expenses and all the rest in worldwide diversified stock ETF's.

Lots of comments here about not buying bonds or bond funds. I can understand why, looking at performance in recent years with increasing interest rates, but I still think there’s a place for bonds. Think of them as an “insurance” if rates go down at the same time as equities go down. In this environment bond values will rise. I have about 10% VAGP for this reason, which hold thousands of gov and investment grade bonds and also pays a monthly dividend. I also have some short duration bonds, less volatile than long duration with slightly better income than cash or MMF.

I'm not an expert but for anyone who retired in 2000 and sat through the next 13 years, not timing the market in 2000 was a bad idea.

I am 100% stocks with a 6-month cash cushion. I am moving some money into what is effectively a bond ETF although it is not called that.

I worry that bond ETFs are very susceptible to interest rate changes. Doesn't the safety and predictability of bonds come from holding them to maturity? But bond ETFs keep replacing bonds so they can stick to their duration target don't they? I'm not sure about it, and that has kept me away from them. Is it a valid concern?

Surely bonds are dead

If you have a sufficient, inflation-adjusted pension, don't plan to leave an inheritance, and your existing assets are enough to cover the gap between planned expenses and pension income over your remaining life expectancy, you no longer need returns above the inflation rate. In this case, risk minimization can take priority over return maximization.

As a 70-year-old in Germany, I keep several years' worth of expenses in a single money market fund to cover the income gap, alongside the ARERO multi-asset fund as an investment component. ARERO rebalances internally on a tax-neutral basis and benefits from a 30% tax exemption at the fund level.
