So we’re gonna pretend corporations don’t just pay politicians for policy? Greed is the problem and maybe we are all guilty

Beef farmer here, usually get nervous watching videos on the industry because they can often be extremely misleading, but yall did a great job giving a good overview of the situation. Right now is the first time since I could remember where my neighboring farms have had any amount of competitive advantage which I’m happy about. One of the things that people don’t realize is just how much the price of cows went up, 3 years ago a Holstein calf was $500-700 whereas now it’s pushing $2000. That’s $2,000 on an 18 month bet that the price will still be high when it reaches maturity, assuming it doesn’t die randomly as calves sometimes do. It’s a huge gamble to invest in growing the heard when in the current environment, a single tweet from a senile old man can tank the market. We’re cashing in as much as we can but we know that it will come down so we are being cautious in terms of expansion.

The problem is people can't afford expensive beef, beef has never been so affordable for so long and maybe eventually people's dietary habits change and the demand shrinks permanently

If farmland costs more than can be earned from it, there's something driving prices other than the business side of farming. It's partly big players who can buy without financing driving the small guys out, but farming is also a social class. People who own land outrank people who don't. People with more land outrank people with less. When they talk about it being a way of life and not a business, that's what they're talking about. My entire working life has been me showing up to work and being yelled at and abused, and this won't stop until I retire. These guys don't have to put up with that.
