"They don't play the music, they poke at it." That's my favorite quote of the month

    Whenever Dave says "remember?...
" like "Adam Fischer, remember, started out doing Bartok orchestral music on Nimbus", 99% of the time my answer is "no Dave. No I do not remember". But I love that you remember Dave. That's why I'm here.

Simon Rattle is revered in Birmingham because he refurbished the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra while successfully lobbying the business community and city council to create a custom built concert venue of world class quality -Symphony Hall. And he left his London post when he realised he would not be able to do the same thing for London -but yes, while his Szymanowski is irreplaceable he is not the greatest conductor of his generation.

Choosing to be a Conductor has to be one of the worst life choices a person could make. It's highly specialized, misunderstood by most, has very limited employment opportunities, controlled by others with little appreciation for what they do and subject to vociferous attacks and criticism. I worked for one for many years and give anyone props for attempting it (whether or not they have the talent for it).

Ha! "It's only subjective to the extent that you don't have standards." I will be using that brilliant quotation till my dying day--and maybe beyond.

I recall hearing Cobra for the first time back when Emusic used to be a good resource. I foolishly thought that this must be some type of instructional video for non musicians who wanted to learn how to read a score by following a slower tempo. I never imagined that these performances were to be taken seriously.

Let me tell you something even more surreal about Cobra: he released some recordings that aren't even performed by real players, but rather by virtual instruments.

I’ve never been so annoyed as listening to Pletnev’s Beethoven

I wasn't familiar with Cobra, so I went to go listen to one of his performances on YouTube. I'm still not back yet......
You know it's going to be a long day when Cobra takes the repeat.
