BMW 5 Series E39 1995–2004 Review

The BMW 5 Series E39 is one of the most respected generations of BMW’s executive sedan, produced from nineteen ninety-five to two thousand four. In this detailed BMW E39 review, we look at what made the fourth-generation 5 Series so successful, how it drives today, which engines and versions stand out, and what owners need to know before buying one. The E39 combined classic BMW styling with rear-wheel drive, sophisticated suspension engineering and a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. This video covers important versions including the BMW 530i, BMW 530d, BMW 540i, BMW 5 Series Touring and the high-performance BMW E39 M5. We examine the differences between early pre-facelift and later facelift cars, including the arrival of BMW’s recognizable corona-ring headlights. We also look at the E39 chassis, steering characteristics, aluminum suspension components, straight-six engines, the M57 diesel, the 4.4-liter V8 used in the 540i and the S62 V8 found in the E39 M5. The BMW E39 has a reputation for excellent steering, balanced handling, long-distance comfort and understated design, but ownership is not always simple. This review also covers common BMW E39 problems such as cooling-system failures, brittle plastic components, oil leaks, VANOS wear, suspension bushings, electrical faults, window regulators, dead display pixels, corrosion and timing-chain-guide problems on some V8 models. If you are considering buying a BMW E39, choosing the right engine and finding a properly maintained example are extremely important. A cheap car with poor service history can quickly become expensive, while a well-maintained 530i, 540i, 530d or Touring can still deliver the driving experience that made this generation famous. This video is for anyone interested in the BMW 5 Series E39, BMW E39 reliability, BMW E39 buying advice, BMW E39 common problems, BMW 530i, BMW 540i, BMW 530d, BMW E39 M5, classic BMW models and used BMW ownership.
