The main difference I think is that Disney portrays the ideal "excitement of love" while Ghibli portrays the ideal "comfort of love". Disney is the 3-star Michelin dish with a grand performance and flambe, and Ghibli is hot chicken soup by grandma on a cold day. Neither is better than the other, both have different niches to fill.

Something I love about Ghibli love stories is that there’s no need for a kiss in order for us to see that the characters love each other

What I see in Miyazaki’s works is that, in his eyes, life is full of pain, loneliness, and struggle. Yet love is what allows two people to inspire each other to keep walking.

Something I love about Ghibli is how they show different types of love(not just romance). In Howl's Moving Castle, Turnip-head(I don't remember his name) has an unrequited love for Sophie, but when the Witch of Waste says that his true love is in love with someone else. He doesn't push his love onto Sophie; he accepts that and bids the group farewell, putting an end to the war. In My Neighbor Totoro, we see a familial love between the sisters and how much they care for each other. Ponyo's dad loves her so much and just wants his daughter to be happy, even if that means she's human(something her dad hates). We see in Kiki's Delivery Service, the care and attachment to our pets(I know Jiji is more than a pet). And there are so many more examples of familial love.

I hate the argument, "The show is made for kids, so it's ok to be mindless," or whatever they spin it. Kids deserve good, maybe better shows than what they get, especially nowadays. Looking at you Disney live remakes.

I’m Japanese, I love Ghibli films but I also love Disney. I feel the difference is mainly cultural. While I find Ghibli movies very moving and emotional in a relatable way, Disney’s outwardly expressive form of love is also inspirational, as we rarely see it and we envy that.

Eugene loved Rapunzel truly, not for her hair, its beauty or power. That was true love there

Disney is one of the reasons I thought I hated romance. Superficial, mindless, romanticized (pun intended) and just... performative. When I saw Ghibli's portrayal of love, I realized that I actually love... love. It feels human, soft, inspiring but not all encompassing. Love isn't just a kiss.
