Writing names on cups is a nice move from Starbucks. They usually misspell your name or write unusual messages, which makes you take a photo and share it on social media, which eventually becomes free publicity for Starbucks.

I also attend one of these top U.S. business schools, and overall I really value the experience, but some of the strategic thinking still being taught has been empirically disproven.

Two key realities:
1. Big brands are big because they have many more customers, not because they “serve a niche better” through STP. In practice, it makes more sense to target all category buyers in a given geographic region than to narrow in on specific demographics.
2. Loyalty doesn’t vary much between brands in the same category. Bigger brands usually have more loyalty too, simply because they’re easier to find and remember.

As for loyalty programs, the evidence shows they’re typically unprofitable. small gains at high cost.

The bigger issue is that a lot of strategy still assumes consumers are rational decision makers, rather than creatures of habit operating in patterned, complex systems. It’s an outdated framework dressed up in modern packaging.

Got recommended this video and so happy I clicked! Would love to see longer episodes breaking up each topic you included in this video with real world examples to solidify the concepts. I also enjoyed you breaking down real life companies so continuing to do that is quite helpful!

Another vote for a deep dive into the soft skills of the business world!

Thanks again for doing this and looking forward to more episodes!

TLDW:
1. Differentiate business model from its alternatives and make it distinct to consume your products and services despite having alternatives
2. Pick a very specific segment/demographic of your product category and cater to them really well
3. Identify and solve very specific problems
4. Get customer feedback and use A/B testing to know which approach is preferred

I’ve spent years chasing answers in documentaries, podcasts, even ancient texts—and none of it hit me the way The Obscured Principles book did. It’s like it was written for the few who are ready to break the illusion and remember who they really are.
