The REAL Problem With Disney Live Action Movies

You get two things out of Disney these days, preachy/heavy-handed agendas or lazy fast-food entertainment. The problem is nobody at Disney cares about good writing or making a great movie. This is a big Hollywood problem in general and they can't keep losing this much money every year.

They're next level lazy and quickly forgotten. The Black Cauldron would be a far better live action movie if it was darker like the book, but Disney will never take that chance or try being creative.

The only live actions I like are Cinderella and Jungle Book. People count Christopher Robin as well, but I like to consider that as its own separate thing from a live action, that I very much enjoy as well. The thing I like about Cindy and Jungle is how they both actually improved upon the original story in some fashion and were worthwhile different takes on the classics. I don’t like Alice in Wonderland much, but even I can respect that movie for the new take Burton did on it.

None of the live actions do this as far as I’m concerned. Not Aladdin. Not Little Mermaid. None of them improve or do anything to improve the story. And for every “improvement,” there’s a drawback on a story and character level.

Toy Story 3 ( 2010) really was the last PIXAR film that was acclaimed and TS3 was also nominated for Best Picture.

LFG! Thank you for answering my question Sean!

Still so curious to see what that initial direction for Snow White would’ve been

The Cinderella remake was actually pretty great and worked because while the old one is great, it mostly focuses on the mice. So in the live action they had more to explore with Cinderella and the prince.

The problem I have with these live action remakes is that I have no real reason to watch them over the original and I just feel that Disney has gotten lazy by remaking their animated movies and the fact they seem to have forgotten what made those movies classics. Basically, the remakes don’t have the magic that made the animated originals classics in the first place.

Most of them lack the MAGIC that the originals had

Aladdin was still pretty terrible, just not as outright disrespectful and horrendously made as Snow White.

It honestly feels like these companies are dumber than the average consumer, or more likely money focused instead of entertainment focused. These companies have forgotten what they’re here to do and it shows. Specifically with Disney with the live action remakes and with WB the treatment of their properties like the absolute disrespect to the looney tunes IP.

Originally the “Beauty and the Beast” remake was meant to be a film adaptation of the Broadway show, combined with added elements from the original fairytale. Meaning, it was not supposed to be an outright remake. Where it fell apart was the screenwriters did not follow through on the twist about the Enchantress’ identity and what really happened to Belle’s mother, (spoiler: the Enchantress is Belle’s mother in the original fairytale), combined with the poor casting decision of Emma Watson as Belle.

Aladdin improved some of the original's outdated elements. But, did they royally screw Iago. Live-action Iago would have gotten along with animated Sultan and vice-versa
