For years, Matt has wanted to recreate an extraordinary historical sword with one of the most unusual blade designs he has ever encountered. The original sword was made in Spain, featuring an absolutely wild flamboyant rapier blade with dramatic waves and serrations unlike anything Matt had worked with before. Even more incredible, the original hilt was made in France and features a spectacular design carved to resemble interlocking chain links. But there was always a problem. How do you actually make something like this? Rather than jumping straight into the massive sword he has imagined for more than two decades, Matt decided to take the first step by building a prototype. For Blade Show 2026, Matt takes the basic concept of this historical flamboyant rapier and transforms it into a one-handed broad sword prototype. This isn't the final version of the sword he has dreamed about making for 20+ years. It's an experiment — a chance to finally overcome the fear of attempting a design that has lived in his head for decades. And the blade is CRAZY. The flamboyant sword design creates a complex, serrated profile that pushes sword making and grinding into territory Matt hasn't explored before. After spending decades making and grinding sword blades, this project forces him to approach the blade completely differently. The goal isn't simply to make a sword that looks like the original. The goal is to figure out HOW to make it. From forging and shaping the blade to grinding the bizarre geometry, developing the proportions, and tackling the incredible chain-link-inspired hilt, this prototype is the first real step toward the much larger project. Matt and Ilya Alekseyev also discuss the historical reasoning behind these strange flamboyant blades and why a sword from the 17th century might have been designed with such an intimidating and unusual profile.
