  I always imagined Viking voyages as just battles and exploration, but surviving the freezing seas itself was already an incredible achievement. Their ability to adapt to extreme environments was amazing.

  I don’t think most people appreciate how much work it takes to make things by hand. We are so lucky to live on this side of the Industrial Revolution. Just surviving in the 9th and 10th Centuries was a lot of hard labor, not thriving, surviving.

  I was part of rowing the replica we have constructed in Roskilde museum, there are trips from May to September next to the fjord the museum is located at if you ever swing by as a tourist.<br><br>My little girl had heard stories of Tor, Freja, Loke, the Midgård Serpent, the Fenrir Wolf and the valkyries(fierce mystical women, half witch-half warrior, their powers ill understood even by the other gods who gave them a wide berth, they answered only to Odin himself), but now at 12 years old, &nbsp;it was time she became a little sea-dog herself and felt the wind in her hair and the thrill at sea!

  It’s incredible to think about how Vikings survived freezing seas without modern heating. Their clothing, ship design, survival knowledge, and ability to endure extreme cold make those ancient voyages even more impressive.

  Odin gave them enough brains to stay off the sea in winter. Freja warmed the Norse men with her beauty,while the dwarfs fires used in their forges in Midgard kept their land heated.<br>All hail Baldur!

  It is well known that the Vikings stored their ships in boathouses during the winter. They avoided venturing out onto the open sea during the cold season. This is well documented through archaeological investigations and historical accounts from the Middle Ages. The speculations in this video are based on fantasy.

  Many years ago, I was in involved in fisheries research on purse seine boats of the north BC coast. We worked on deck in damp, cold weather. I remember a Haida cook who brought out hot rendered pork rinds from the galley. It was to die for. Our bodies hungered for fat and the energy boost it delivered. Some folks were also wearing Cowichan sweaters, heavy wool garment that kept you warm even when soaked.
