  The song was from 1969, when Bowie was unknown. The video was put together three years later, when he had begun to make a name for himself. He was the music genius of the 1970s, always moving and never getting stuck in one sound. He did things that were exciting, adventurous and which didn't sound quite like anything else. And he often had a kind of poetry in his songs. This isn't really just about an astronaut drifting off helplessly into space. It is about a person's inner feelings of being alone and distant from everyone else. There are legends and icons. Bowie is a level up from that.

  Major Tom is a recurrent character in Bowie's discography. He appears in several songs, at least in "Space Oddity", "Ashes to Ashes" and "Blackstar" AFAIK

  David Bowie isn’t a rabbit hole, he’s an entire warren.<br><br>Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, Berlin trilogy, Plastic soul, 80s pop giant, avant-garde experimenter, never-ending reinventions of voice, fashion, and persona, the collaborator, the influencer, the lore, the symbolism, the mythology, the actor, and the philosophy lecturer.<br><br>And when he died in 2016, the timeline split. &nbsp;Right after his death, the world started behaving like it misplaced the instruction manual, political landscapes went sideways. He was a living reminder that art can challenge power, a symbol of authenticity versus greed, someone who consistently pushed against conformity, when he exited the world stage, the universe lost its cosmic switchboard operator.

  The title is a riff on Stanley Kubrick&apos;s 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968, this tune was recorded in 1969.

  The second part of this song is Ashes to Ashes and the third is Hello Spaceboy, in all three it refers to Major Tom

  You&apos;ve got it right. In his early years, Bowie was a big fan of Pink Floyd (especially Syd Barrett) and the Beatles. In 1975-76 he began experimenting in search of a more original sound.
