"The House of the Rising Sun" has been sung for three hundred years — by miners, prisoners, drifters, folk singers, and finally by four young men from Newcastle who recorded it in a single 15-minute take in May 1964.

Three months later, American combat troops began arriving in Vietnam.
The song went with them.

Nobody wrote it about the war. And yet, for a generation of young American soldiers — most of them not yet twenty — it became the war in a single verse. It played in barracks. It played in bars. It played on radios in jungles most of them had never wanted to see.

58,220 of them never came home.
303,000 came home wounded.
The rest came home changed.

Our arrangement is not a rock song. It's a dark ballad — slower, heavier, meant for the memory of a soldier decades later, alone in a quiet room, listening to a song he first heard when he was nineteen years old.

The archival footage in this video comes from public domain sources.
It honors ordinary soldiers, civilians, and families of every side.
This video takes no political position on the war. It is a lament for a generation.

For the ones who came home.
For the ones who didn't. 🕯

— Aura Vault | Music, History, Respect

I came home but with wounds no one can see and a few scars that can be seen.
The invisible wounds are the worst. Now I walk around an old man with cancer all by myself.
Welcome home my brothers and sisters.
Semper Fi.

I was in VN 69-70 and I am feeling NOW like when I first got back. PTSD is forever and it is as if it gets worse with age. Our country has evolved into a country I would have never believed. I find it is difficult to live today under the "new" country it has become.

I have been gone from that stinking place for 56 years. When your foot hits the ground there and you take your first breath, you smell IT. You never get the smell out of your memory.
I haven't heard that song in years, maybe 20. Listening to it, triggered something inside and I don't know why.
To those who made it home, Semper Fi. To those that didn't, I will see you on the other side.

Vietnam, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Came home from my last deployment 7-7-07. I was 56 and called it quits. Still alive at 75. This song still rings in my head.

Had a close friend in high school who went to Nam. He came home, not the same. I was a police detective when I got a suicide call. The war had caught up to him. RIP to all the brave heroes of that war, and every war

This song, and Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones were anthems for those of us who spent time in country. I've seen a few comments about this song having nothing to do with the war and would just like to say that those people need to actually pay attention to the video before opening their mouths. It CLEARLY says that in the captions!
A lot of us came back from that god forsaken place very different people. I did two tours over there. One with the 1st infantry division and one with the 23rd Americal (now nonexistent as far as I know). I distinctly remember my C.O. telling all of us door gunners that the average life expectancy of a door gunner in a Huey gunship was about 15 minutes. My first flight lasted 30 minutes before we took RPG fire. Anyway, sorry for the rant.
Pay attention to the actual video people!

And Welcome Home Brothers!

I cried when I heard this song with the video. My husband is a hero. He served in Vietnam and came home with Parkinson's. I was in military when the men came home in the Philippines. I saw the damage. I will never forget.
