Stuart wasn’t just a good punk guitarist. He was a great songwriter, a fantastic frontman and a truly great musician. His influence lives on and on through generations of players.

When I ran the fan club in 83 I was a star struck teenager who couldn’t believe I was in constant contact with my hero. Looking back, and with the benefit of hindsight, poor old Stuart was a deeply troubled man. He was given to serious mood swings, and this was at the time when the band could do no wrong. A few years ago I swapped correspondence with the lady who took over the fan club, I did it as a labour of love, she did it as a business.

One of the things she said was so prescient and goes a long way to explaining factors in Stuart’s decline. Jan touched on the fact that each album sold less than its predecessor and the venues got progressively smaller. This must have been so difficult to deal with and the inverse of how a ‘normal’ career plays out…

Speaking as a recovering alcoholic who stopped drinking in 2001 one thing I can confirm is that, if someone has inner demons the very WORST thing that one can do is reach for the bottle….it takes any bad situation and makes them infinitely worse

Stuart was one of the greatest human beings I ever had the privilege to meet, I am just so sad that he couldn’t get help when he needed it most

The Skids were the 1st band I saw live 1978. I'm still listening to them to this day. Joy is a superb album.

Such a unique writer, singer and guitarist. A huge influence on me. I played the fringe festival and made trip over the river to Dunfermline to seek out the bench dedicated to stuart. It was a really emotional moment for me.
RIP Stuart.

Sadly, I never got to see Big Country with Stuart up front. One of my greatest regrets. He was a tragic hero. 😢💔
