Hidden Lakes, Backroads & a Montana Sunset | Mission Montana Ep8

We left one of Montana’s most beautiful lakes behind and took the long way south… What we found along the backroads ended with a sunset we’ll never forget. Episode 8 of our Mission Montana Overland Adventure begins with one of those mornings that makes it almost impossible to pack up and leave. We wake at Kintla Lake to absolutely perfect conditions. The lake is like glass without a single ripple, the sun is shining, and a light haze hangs between the mountains in the distance. After spending a little more time taking it all in, we finally say goodbye to one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited on this trip and begin making our way south. Our route takes us onto Red Meadow Creek Road, a drive recommended to us by one of the gentlemen working at the Polebridge Mercantile. He told us it was incredibly beautiful — and he was absolutely right. Cutting through the heart of Flathead National Forest, we’re surrounded by rugged mountains, dense conifer forest, waterfalls, streams, and alpine lakes. One of the highlights is Red Meadow Lake, where calm water is framed by forest and tall grass meadows. It’s another reminder that sometimes the best parts of a trip are found simply by taking the scenic route. From there, we make our way into Whitefish for a much-needed lunch at Bonsai Brewing. Noelle tries the Bonsai Bowl with poke along with a flight of beers, while I go with the Fortunate Burger. After days on the trail, the food and beer definitely hit the spot. We then head into Kalispell for a little real-world maintenance — cleaning up, doing laundry, and resetting before the next part of the adventure. The following day, we make our way to Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Rather than simply passing through, we decide to circle the lake, exploring the small communities and farmland along the shoreline. We travel through the Flathead cherry-growing region and stop at a roadside stand run by a mother and daughter from one of the local farms to pick up a fresh batch of those famous Flathead cherries. After exploring Swan Lake and the Swan Valley, we leave the pavement behind once again and head into the mountains of Lolo National Forest in search of a campsite shared with us by our friend Willy. Once we find camp, Noelle puts together another amazing dinner — but Montana saves the best for last. As evening settles in, the sky explodes with color. Amber clouds light up above the mountains while rainbows stretch across the landscape, giving us one of the most incredible sunsets of the entire trip. It’s one of those completely unexpected moments that has us scrambling for cameras and running around camp trying to capture it all. From the glass-like waters of Kintla Lake to forest roads, mountain lakes, Flathead cherries, and an unforgettable Montana sky, Episode 8 reminds us exactly why we love taking the long way.
