  Anthony Jeselnik had the chance to become Greg Giraldo’s successor (Comedy Central wanted him to take second chair behind Jeff Ross) but he knew the thing that drove Giraldo mad was that he became singularly known for roasting and it would overshadow his standup. So he quit after three roasts

  I liked it when Lisa Lampanelli got one of the funniest zingers during a roast that I can’t even remember anything other than what was said to her by Jeff Ross. She’s known to like black men, and was told that she had seen more black “members “ than the urinals at Union Station. Member wasn’t the word used, though. It was brutal, and made the entire room gasp and then go silent. Norm Macdonald was brilliant, because fame and money were never important to him, so he would say the funniest and most outrageous things, never worrying about crossing any line, because for him, there wasn’t one.

  The sad irony is that Greg Giraldo hated roasting because it was the one thing the wider public knew him for. What made him so good at it was that he genuinely resented many of the more famous people sitting on those dais—people he knew he was funnier and more talented than. You could practically watch him unravel during the Larry the Cable Guy Roast, visibly furious that this hack was worth tens of millions, selling out arenas, and even landing a voice role in Cars.
