The Behringer/Music Tribe owned semiconductor spin-off Cool Audio has the V3046M which is a contemporary monolithic matched transistor array.

I was lucky enough to meet Barrie Gilbert when he was an AD Fellow back in the day. He visited WJ for an afternoon to give a lecture on some product ideas and look for potential product requirements from us. WJ was well respected and a big AD customer back then. Barrie was absolutely brilliant, there is no other way to describe it. I remember he stayed past his normal schedule to present three ideas he was working on at the time, they were just amazing. His creativity was something else. The only one I can remember was a circuit that would compute the median of a signal rather than the average. I'm not sure what came of it.

I think I remember Barrie explaining that he analyzed every combination of three (?) transistors and found that a handful yielded interesting circuits. George Wilson must have been on top of his game that day to win their current mirror challenge, although Tek had no shortage of brilliant engineers. Anyway, I just thought I'd share my memories of a truly gifted engineer.

A couple 1k's above the Wilson mirror can add some marginal improvement as well in the same way, I think.

There's the dual BCM847 and its complement BCM857. Most of these far exceed the rather cautious matching spec, even without the "M" designator. Not breadboard friendly, but for a PCB design they are great.

Happy new year and thanks again for your fine tutorials of 2024.. your channel is REFERENCE material and reminds me of Robert Pease works RIP ... ah yes those were the days...
Im currently designing a unity gain SE to BAL converter audio output stage but im limited to 16V rail max and im breadboarding over this new years holiday period from a stock of hundreds of BC549. i expect lots of tears and hair pulling... i would love for you to discuss the longtailed pair esp if you can allude to low voltage applications.. would be a great help?

I was going to buffer the outputs with bjt voltage followers and whatever neg fbk ratio presents itself? Lots of fun ..

Thanks for your video! What do you think about the BCM847/857 matched pairs? They're "only" matched to within 10%, but for many applications like lin/log converters I found them to be decent cheap alternatives.

hello can I ask something about what you calculated at 2:28? it says that the base voltage is higher than the power supply voltage? how?
