My moms friend came to live with us after her veterinarian husband committed suicide. She brought 2 big black cats and a parrot. I fell for them all. But Pita the parrot was an experience like no other. She had the cats trained. She would eat dinner with us. And in the mornings she would ring her bell and yell, Pita Pita Pita. One day though I came down the stairs and she lit up and said my name. From then on she knew my name and I would come home from school and do my homework with her on my shoulder. We sat and listened to music together. It came time my mom’s friend healed and met someone and moved out. Such a great and different year that was to experience living with a parrot.

I have an Eclectus Parrot - he talks too! And often in context, which suggests he has some understanding of what is being said ("you want dinner?" when he's hungry, "more" when he wants water, "where's Mum?" when he wants to know where my wife is - and then flies to her if she calls out). So when people talk about "bird brain" I think of it as a compliment. Those tiny walnut sized bird brains are capable of listening, learning and then responding in a way that is really incredible given the size of their skulls. Meanwhile us humans with supposedly big brains and high intelligence...........

When people say their parrot is annoying, it reminds me that I would give anything to have HRH, Tootsabella, the Princess of Chicken (a green-cheek Amazon), back in my orbit. She gave me 41 years of love and trust. Although I'm adopting a rescue bird, she will always be loved and sorely missed. 🦜

There was an African Grey in my small town pet shop for years who could talk like crazy because of all the people he met, he was too expensive for anyone to buy I guess (3K in the 90s) and he was still there when the pet shop went out of business. I hope he's out there amazing someone with everything he learned.
