One thing I've learned in my life is you can save people from many things, but you can rarely save them from themselves

He does not sound like the kind of person who would purposefully leave the two donkeys tied up with the thought that he would never return. He would know that burros are desert survivors....they can make a living pretty much anywhere. Leaving them tied up with food and water suggests to me that he likely intended to make a short jaunt, but something happened, and he never returned.

I find it hard to believe that he would leave the burros tied up to die.

It's worthwhile to read more about Everett Ruess if only to clear up some details. The burros were not "tied up," they were in a corral formed by a steep canyon wall and a brush fence Ruess probably constructed or at least made usable. Ruess did not leave them food---no one carries food for pack animals. Burros are natural grazers and they had plants to eat inside the corral.
That he had left his equipment with his burros makes me believe that he was coming back, but never made it. He could have slipped and fallen and been injured too badly. I think this is probably most likely.
Ruess is not like McCandless in that by the time he disappeared, he was very familiar with the area he was traveling in. McCandless made one mistake after another because of his ignorance.
Davis Gulch was flooded by Lake Powell after Glen Canyon Dam was built in 1963, so it's possible we will never find his remains.

Everrett grew up during the Spanish flu pandemic and in the shadow of WW1. It doesn't surprise me that he needed to explore feelings around death at a young age.

Horse person here. Assuming he went missing 1 week before he Christmas and his dad found the campsite 1 week after Christmas, there's no way those donkeys would have been left with enough food to be healthy. Equines don't regulate their feeding of oaks well. They are designed to constantly be moving and munching on grasses. That being said, they either would have broken free or been noticeable malnutrished by the time they were found if they had been abandoned. Someone was caring for them and recently when they were found. That much i can promise you.

One reason why McCandless left is that he found out that his dad had a completely separate family across town! His sister talks about it in her book! And it is mentioned in several stories that have been done about his death!

i've recently learned that a desert is defined by the amount of rainfall, not heat. antarctica is a desert.

McCandless' family was extremely dysfunctional. Their portrayal in Into the Wild was massively sugarcoated.
