Man do I love the Brit take on stuff. An American might describe the seas in rather alarming terms, a brit might call them waves. Shit's going down in a hurricane, the britbongs hove to to have a sip of whisky and wait it out. Everyone else is losing their shit and/or boats and the brits are just sitting there and sippin whisky for two days. Outstanding.

In Sweden it's called "drejja bi", probably originates from Dutch.

Just want to add, L and L used to use a sea anchor off the boat to prevent the bow from getting thrown over. I found a drifter for a 50' fishing boat that did a good job at that. You cleat it to the windward bow cleat, wad it up and throw it into the water. The hull, even though it's on the windward side, does a good job of blocking the wind. It falls into the water and goes aft as most boats these days sail out of their slick, which is a bad thing. The drifter would stop the boat from sailing out of it and eventually would be directly upwind of the boat keeping the bow from being knocked over. The drifter only cost me like $50.

Fantastic episode. Indeed its the speed in these heavy weathers and waters, and when you manage to slow down or stop its a whole new world.

This is perfect timing for me (even though the video is 2 years old) as yesterday I watched your video of that epic sail from New Foundland to Ireland (1970s?) in the face of a terrible easterly...you mentioned 'heaving to' or having 'hove to' and I wasn't sure if that meant you'd turned 180 degrees or what....so now I know! Also, the weight of your cutter....35 tons....staggering....how much of that was ballast and how much was timber I wonder. Thanks so much for your videos....

Yes indeed. Or if you want things settled to make a repair. Modern fin keel spade rudder boats don’t do well with this.

Also works well on racing dinghies whilst waiting between races.

Great video. On dinghies and small boats I have found it is seamanlike to heave to when putting in a reef or messing with an outboard.

I wanted to learn to sail , I asked a friend who had cruised for many years for advice.
He said “buy a dinghy and learn to sail it and while you’re at it learn to heave to”
The best two bits of sailing advice I’ve had!

    What about a sea anchor?

Hey Tom, cheers for the insightful video mate

I’m often pondering the best way to handle extreme conditions - is there a point at which the conditions are too great to safely heave to ? I would plan to heave to under try sail and storm jib, maybe even with a para-anchor on a bridle at the bow

Many sailing authors advocate running downwind under storm jib sheeted amidships or bare poles and series drogue / warps in a bight trailed off the stern

However the Pardey’s as well as yourself strongly advocate heaving to as a last resort

Wondering what your view is on this?

Thanks for your help 🙏🏻
