I am too one of these strange people that didn’t need music when instead you can listen to the sounds of the journey.

No reflection on your choice of music, but the actual sounds of the journey feed our fantasy of travelling with you.

On my first trip to Cantabria and Asturias, by car from Santander, we stopped in a layby to have some lunch which we had bought at a local shop. There was a Spanish car in the layby and the driver was looking at us standing by our car eating. He came over and it turned out he was an Englishman who had married a lady from Galicia. He asked what we thought of the North of Spain. We said it was beautiful and not so touristy. He made us promise that when we got home to the UK not to tell anyone. We went back many times after that.

Spanish northern narrow gauge trains was known as "FEVE" network (wich stands for Narrow Track Spanish Railway company). It was integrated into "RENFE" (Spanish National Railway Network company). "Cercanias", or "Rodalies" in Catalan speaking regions (wich translate more or less as commuting rail network) is a division and a comercial name of RENFE for ALL commuting networks in the country regardless of the gauge witdh. So is not correct to refer to narrow gauge trains as "Cercanias" but simply as narrow gauge trains or as old FEVE network. To add confusion, Spanish nation-wide train public transport system is further divided in two independent companies: RENFE, in the past was the company who owned all the national infrastructure but now only owns the trains; and ADIF (Railway Infrastructure Manager) wich owns all the fixed elements. This division was made in order to allow other train companies to operate in the spanish national railway network... but there is other element: regional railway networks wich operate in some regions in Spain: Catalonia for example has a network FGC (Catalonian Goveverment Railway system) wich also own narrow gauge trains. All this mess is understandable if one knows that in the origin different private companies created different railway networks that eventually were adquired by national or regional goverment public agencies, integrated and extended. Northern Spain has some Switzerland feeling because spanish peninsula has somewhat similar fate as Italic peninsula and Indian peninsula. They all collided with Euroasiatic tectonic plate creating big mountain systems (Himalaya, Alps, Pirineos and Cantabric mountain system, wich is an extension of the Pirineos). In fact, spanish peninsula has various of medium to high mountain systems as oposed to the rest of Europe, wich render transport infrastruture very costly.

Here in Costa Rica our rail system uses the narrow gauge configuration and the cars are brought from Spain, almost the same type as shown here.
