  When I think of all my 55 years in the church, 4 x gospel doctrine teacher and lastly an institute teacher, I realize (listening to these real stories) that Sunday school didn’t need to be so boring! Thank you John and John for helping me learn what the church tried to steer me clear of with their curriculum!

  Digging into the history of polygamy, outside of church sources, is what got me counseled and ostracized from my ward when I was a youth convert.  Later in my adulthood and long after I was out of the church, I met a descendant of one of the would-be wives that got away from Brigham Young.  It was like a long-time waiting affirmation of what I always thought, polygamy is totally BS, not God's law and not credible or viable doctrine. Emma was right to push back on this.  That took a lot of bravery and gumption on her part. Especially at that time.

  Another great episode thanks so much.  I thought I knew a lot about LDS history but learning new things and insights  with every episode.  I now have two “new sayings” from the episode I absolutely loved…: “ When I said ‘ get all that you can, I didn’t mean Emma’” and DC 132 was JS at his “revelatory worse”.  I agree with you John D that the way Emma was treated makes me too feel sick inside.  Now instead of spending hours debating,often heated, with family members over our history, , historicity of B of M, The P of GP translation, Blacks and The Priesthood, Polygamy, etc etc I now just say “ Read ALL of DC 132, then ask yourself “does that sound like anything Jesus would say? And THEN get back to me”.    I find the whole patriarchy thing in the Church past and present deeply disturbing.  I remember, with much shame and regret I might add, as a missionary in the early 70s discussing BY’s statement about Joseph Smith claimed he would go to Hell itself to get Emma , to which BY responded “ He will have to!”   We often shared this story with ignorant, unfeeling glee, agreement and smugness. 😢…A generation of young men brained washed into sexist patriarchy that exists even today.

  Phoebe Woodruff, first wife of Apostle Wilford Woodruff, also shared the ambivalent feelings of Mormon women in polygamy. She was asked to defend the principal in a mass meeting of Mormon women. A few days later in a conversation with a longtime friend she was asked, “How is it, Sister Woodruff, that you have changed your views so suddenly about polygamy? I thought you hated and loathed it?” … “I have not changed,” was her response: “I loathe the unclean thing with all the strength in my nature, but, Sister, I have suffered all that a woman can endure.   Many, most, members have no clue what Joseph&apos;s polygamy practices entailed. This book should be required reading, puts the GTE to shame.

  The parallel between Joseph Smith and Heber C Kimball’s relationship and the relationship between the men in the current “Trust Me. The False Prophet”series on Netflix is sickening.
