  I Personally worked in a restoration shop in Pa &nbsp;USA that specialized in restoration and rebuilding VINTAGE &nbsp;, 1920s 1930, 1940s &nbsp;RACING engines .   Firstly it seems strange that a US narrative about engineering implies that in Britain, which made two Merlins for every one made in USA, it was without interchangeable parts. &nbsp;<br><br>The supercharger is not on top of but behind the engine. &nbsp;The Bendix fuel device, which today would be called single point fuel injection, was a joint design by RR and the SU carburettor company, who had devised fuel injection for much smaller car engines and RR wanted it developed much larger; &nbsp;USA had spare manufacturing capacity and no German interference so given the manufacture.<br><br>The threads were altered to US ones and because of that a set of AF spanners was supplied with each engine, some British mechanics kept them for decades. &nbsp;The conversion was done carefully and to RR approval because each critical fastening had to perform as well as the original. &nbsp;It was done because there were negligible supplies of either tools or fasteners to Whitworth or BSF form in USA.<br><br>The cylinder head design was a RR one but because Packard was not starting with the early versions of the engine it never made single piece ones.<br><br>The bearing metal was a useful advance.

  Why We made the Allson v 12s &amp; 16s used in the Mustangs &amp; flying tigers&apos; better metallurgy &amp; tighter tolerances &amp; common threads &amp; tools &amp; now used in tractor pulling competitions &amp; running strong:)
