Vintage speakers is like having a Vintage car,it may not be up to modern standards but it has something special about it.

This may be already posted, but those were set up in most studios horizontally, It makes better sense with the driver locations. The drivers were mirrored so one could flip them to get the tweeter up or down, depending on preferences. Plus they were used primarily as near-field, so the axis was pretty much from a central location in the studio.

Us old bastards that want these can't hear above 12kHz anyhow.

I got a pair of these in mint condition for $150 a few years ago. I really like them.

I do wish he'd upgrade a pair for us though. Just so we can see what he can do with them. These speakers have huge nostalgic value for many.

Oriented on its side was oftentimes how this platform was set up.

It would've been interesting to examine it's measured performance laying on it's long side, meter bridge style, whereby the mid and high are aligned vertically.

Of course it's still saddled with all kinds of compromise, however I suppose it's worth noting.

Technical measurements tell something, but your ears tell you another thing..... Even some speakers measure bad, the sound coming out of them is still enjoyable to your ears, and I think that is how they designed speakers in the past, based in how nice they sound to your ears.

I restore a fair amount of vintage JBL’s, the caps are almost always wayyyyyyy out!! And don’t get me started on wax seals, it does indicate the diaphragms are oem, it also indicates the foam inside the compression driver is dust, the terminal ends inside are oxidized. The first thing I do is pop those seals, remove and replace the foam, clean up all terminal ends, and physically check the original drivers for hairline cracks.

Literal studio monitors. They were made to be sideways above the console in a fairly near field configuration.
