To Be Angry With God | Ep. #6

Why does a loving God allow suffering—and what do we do when faith offers no easy answers? In this episode of CathoThinks, Aaron sits down with Petrina, a law lecturer and Catholic, for an honest and deeply human conversation about suffering, happiness, doubt and the search for meaning. Rather than offering simple explanations or “pious platitudes,” Petrina reflects on why pain must first be acknowledged before it can be understood. Together, they explore whether suffering always needs a reason, why Catholics should feel free to express anger and disappointment to God, and how faith can sustain us even when our questions remain unanswered. Drawing from the experiences of Elijah, Sarah in the Book of Tobit and Job, this episode reveals that despair, exhaustion and doubt are not signs of spiritual failure. Scripture itself is filled with people who cried out honestly—and discovered that God did not reject them in their pain. The conversation also explores: • Why worldly success cannot provide lasting fulfilment • What happiness truly means for a Catholic • The difference between the reason for suffering and its meaning • Whether evil can produce a greater good • Why structural and systemic sin must be confronted • How the Mass and Sabbath help us surrender our burdens • Why it is acceptable to feel angry with God • The danger of dismissing pain with religious clichés • How listening can affirm another person’s dignity • Why careers need healthy emotional boundaries • Finding God in silence rather than dramatic signs • What Elijah, Sarah and Job teach us about despair • Why some questions may remain mysteries in this life At the heart of this conversation is a compassionate reminder: God does not demand that we approach Him polished, composed or free from doubt. We can come to Him with our grief, anger, confusion and unanswered questions. Sometimes faith is not receiving the explanation we desperately want—it is choosing to trust that our suffering is seen, even when its meaning remains hidden.
