I looked at both and the Lexus was better overall and still is; bought an LX new in 2002 and put 235K miles in 11 years. The LX570 is even better. LX's get over 400K miles regularly and a lot of off roaders are getting good use in the pre-owned market.

Both are super rugged but tbh in the used market it makes no sense to buy a landcruiser 100 over an lx470. The Lexus will be way nicer inside and much quieter. And it has ride height control front and back, instead of just back like the gx470 or none of that in the landcruiser.

I feel the Land Cruiser flopped was because there is also the Sequoia sold here in the US. Doesn't have the ruggedness of the Land Cruiser but is similar in size and power and is more suitable as a large family hauler like you mentioned for the Lexus LX. Plus, there are lots of trims for the Sequoia from mainstream to luxury as opposed to just luxury for the Land Cruiser.
