There's Always Room for This Apple Crostata

Apple Crostata (Maggiano's Copycat) — flaky homemade crust, warm cinnamon apples, and no pie plate needed. Every holiday season, our family goes to Maggiano's. We're always stuffed by the end of the meal, but there's always room for their warm apple crostata. It's a buttery, flaky crust folded around cinnamon apples, with ice cream melting all over the top. And it's way past time that we make it here in our kitchen. INGREDIENTS: Pie Crust • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter, chilled and cubed • 3 to 3 1/2 tablespoons ice cold water Apple Filling • 4 small Granny Smith apples (or 2–3 large), peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • Pinch of salt • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg • A little butter for dotting (optional) Topping • 1 egg, beaten (egg wash) • Sugar in the raw (turbinado), for sprinkling • Vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of maple syrup, for serving (optional) Bake at 425°F for about 30 minutes. Check at 20 minutes and cover with foil if the crust is browning too fast.
