  If you are wondering why there are so many cats in Mumbai,  when Mumbai (then Bombay) was a booming port under the British Empire, ships arrived daily carrying cotton, spices, and grains. These ships had massive rat problems. Sailors kept cats on board as natural pest control. When ships docked at the Bombay Harbour, many cats slipped off the vessels and chose to stay on land. Mumbai being a coastal fishing town had  abundance of drying nets, open fish baskets, and leftover scraps. The fishermen welcomed the cats because they kept rats away from their valuable fishing nets.
