Why Would American Horror Story: Coven Do This?

The repetitive way that this season loved to kill characters, bring them back, kill them again or villainize someone, redeem them, villainize them again does amusingly parallel the scene of Misty being stuck in her own personal hell

I feel like Cordelia’s disinterest in motherhood made sense to me, considering she lost her husband and her eyesight at the same time. These were two huge aspects of her life that she would’ve needed in order to be a mother. Once those were shattered, so was her illusion of becoming one. I do love the metaphor of becoming a mother to the coven. I also read it as suggesting that motherhood is seen as a woman’s duty. So for her to reject that and claim her rightful place as the Supreme instead of a vessel for her husband, that character arc was powerful.

While i was also a massive ahs fan as a teen, even i was a bit icked out by the fact that kyle was sexually abused by his mom as a tragic backstory to only then become a toyboy to the girls 🙃

When I was a teenager, AHS seemed so amazing and groundbreaking, there was nothing like it on tv. Every time I look back at each series, I wonder why i liked them so much. Murphy shoved so many different storylines into each season that nothing was ever given a decent amount of time to develop satisfactorily

Cordelia went blind, her husband cheated, then betrayed her, then attacked the coven, then died!!! Who wants a baby after that.

21:40 LaLaurie was such a real life terror that people in New Orleans drove her out of the city when they discovered what she'd done to the enslaved people in her home

i went on a ghost tour in new orleans last year and got to see the house where the real-life events took place. there’s so much complexity and unimaginable cruelty to that story, it’s about racism, misogyny, the utter insensitivity and carelessness of rich people and slaveowners. ryan murphy reduced it to something to be used for shock value and exploitation. people only started to take offense with his treatment of real life tragedies when the dahmer and menendez shows came out, but this was before that and just as heinous and questionable.

Comfort Trash™️ is an excellent name for AHS. It’s aesthetically pleasing, and sometimes, that’s all you really need.

Last year, I went back to New Orleans. People talked about the show and how fucked up it was they included Delphine LaLaurie in the show. I went OUTSIDE of the house where she tortured and experimented on countless humans. Locals do not go near the house; they try to avoid walking the sidewalk next to it; they don't look at it, basically, they say the place is cursed, and I do not blame them.

If anyone wants to look up the story, please be aware that what the LaLaurie family did (as far as I can remember, it is not confirmed if her daughters participated, but it is speculated that her last husband was part of the torture) was a real massacre. They were horrible people and what they did to their victims is not something you can easily forget or digest

Watching this as a teenager, I just convinced myself I wasn’t smart enough to understand the seemingly random plot lines and storytelling, and one day I’d look back like “wowwww that was deep”—now I realize I was giving them way too much credit

The thing that pissed me off about Kyle most is that he was clearly traumatised. He was so uncomfortable and triggered when Misty is bathing him and then he goes "meeeh ill be a sex toy to these girls with no impact to my psyche whatsoever"

Edit: Also, in addition to the billion other fumbles they made racially, they undercut their 'antiracist' message in their treatment of the two magic/belief systems. They took very real afro carribean spiritual practices and bastardized and made a spectacle of them AND they made afrocarribean practises look 'dark' and 'primitive' while the white witches were 'cool' and 'modern'.
