  Did a Bourbon Trail trip last year. One of the interesting parts of it was learning about the supporting industries that have flourished from the bourbon craze...barrels, copper tanks and stills, glass bottle makers, etc.

  20 years ago, I worked for a large liquor store in Indy called Kahn's, back when no sales were allowed on Sunday. One Sunday, the boss took the crew down to Bardstown, mainly Buffalo Trace, where we got a personal tour and tasting. We also chose two barrels to be bottled just for our store. Later we visited...I think it was Four Roses...where we tasted a 40-year old barrel in an ancient barrelhouse. We stood around a barrel being used as a table, held our glasses up in the dusty sunbeams coming through the windows and wall cracks, and felt like we were in a bourbon commercial. It was perfect.

  The limestone water is the other necessity for bourbon compared to whiskey. The charred white oak barrel gives the majority of flavor but the limestone water is absolutely necessary as well.

  Apparently this was filmed some time ago. Bourbon sales in particular are down multiple years running. &nbsp;Cooperages have closed or been shuttered. &nbsp;Looks like 60 minutes, one again, got it just about backwards. &nbsp;Definitely not booming any longer.<br>All of that said, a barrel is a thing of beauty and amazingly functional.

  Nice you carried on the story to where else the barrels travel after bourbon production - I am a distiller in New Zealand, and we absolutley look forward to seeing some fresh Ex Bourbon barrels arrive for us to fill!

  A fellow beekeeper of mine. Edgewood Apiaries. Ages honey in used bourbon barrels, and the same distiller uses the barrels again.

  A Maple Syrup brewer in Hartford, Wisconsin (H&amp;L Farms), makes a batch of Bourbon Barrel aged Maple Syrup. He keeps the syrup in the barrel for 3-6 months before bottling it. &nbsp;Tastes great over vanilla ice cream. &nbsp;It can be used as a nice addition to a Whiskey Old Fashioned drink. &nbsp;And of course it adds a nice flavor on top of pancakes, waffles, or french toast!)
