What are/would your 6 trees be and why would you choose those?

Great video. I started converting my .34 acre suburban yard in Zone 5 three years ago, and so glad I did. Its a little crazy but somehow I managed to make it look nice - 18 fruit trees, 3 hazelnuts, 22 fruiting shrubs (half of which are nitrogen fixers), about 40 berry bushes and two area of 16 types Perrenial vege types. Also fruiting vines. I concentrated them in groups in a food forest, two hedgerows and a full sun island. I overplanted the rest of the lawn with clover and other flowering ground cover. Im already getting a lot of food, and those first small crops from some others. But the most fun is seeing all the bees and pollinators, plus the rest of the wildlife that have sought out our property!

Jumped in with both feet in our 0.7ac yard: 2 apples, 2 pears, 2 pluots, 2 peaches, 2 nectarines, 3 persimmons, 1 apricot, 1 mulberry, 2 cherries, 1 pomegranate, 1 mandarin orange , 7 figs, 3 blueberries, 3 blackberries, 3 raspberries, 50 strawberries. For the first year, the trees and vining berries will be in #15 pots and the strawberries in a raised beds. I’ve been waiting a long time to begin my home orchard. SO, decided to go ALL IN. Using pots before in-ground planting makes it easy to move them around the yard to see where they’ll eventually end up as well as where/how to set up the infrastructure (watering system, paths, compost bins, etc.).

If all goes well, the following year I’ll add a greenhouse, a grow tunnel, garden shed, and a chicken coop. 😊

This summer I’m adding 12’ raised beds and 8’ raised beds for veg, roots, and berries. Along with these beds I’m adding large cattle panel arches and detachable flip tops for cool/cold season veg, roots, and early spring seed starts.

Careful! I turned our half acre property into a small orchard/farm and ran out of space before running out of things I want to plant.

Instead of nitrogen fixing shrubs you can also sow alfalfa and clover under your trees instead of grasses as a lawn. Easy, green without much water and super for your soil health.

I grow quince, peaches, cherries, pears, walnuts, serviceberry, haskap, gooseberry blk+ red raspberry, mulberry, goji berry. I do little work mostly just trimming berries. I grow veg in grow bags =easy compost soils so don't buy much in spring direct seed saves $ and I get better results. Disabled cant move well but I grow more than I use and folks buy my fruit.

I had an old apple and a pear tree in the backyard. This year I planted 2 mulberries, 2 more pear, 3 more apples, 2 apricots, 2 peaches, a nectarine, and a cherry tree this year. Also a bunch of berry bushes. Hopefully, in a few years I will be swimming in fruit all season long.

I have a city backyard. I have veggie gardens. I read you can keep fruit trees small. I planted 2 apple trees near a fence and 2 pear trees on an arch. I just added 2 mulberry trees. I think I can fit in an Asian pear but probably not 😅.

My grandparents lived on gentle grassy slope, with some clovers and dandilions, with a country watering ditch for the whole area that flowed in the back. They had sprinkler systems set up, a house where the basement was half way burried by the slope, and on the one side of the house, they had two different kinds of cherry trees, two granny smith type apples, two to three pairs, and a small grape vineyard just a few yards across, with one or two grape varieties, and also a wild plum, some roses, pine trees, a chestnut on the other side of the place, a blackberry patch on the neighbors side of the fence, etc. I remember as a kid, all of the fruit trees and the grapes would just be booming at harvest time. The apples in particularly were huge, and the cherries would just fill up the trees (a red variety, and a white variety). They would even juice the grapes and use the downstairs paved garage as a pantry because it kept so cool 1/2 way burried in the hill, and shaded by trees on the lower end also. I don't know what they did when we weren't there, but I remember the sprinkler set turned on and off automatically, and my Grandpa would prune (the apple runners were great "swords", and actually great berry vine wrackers for making a trail, lol), and sometimes netted them I think. It went all the way back to my Great Grandparents, apparently, they used to have chickens, and there was this one spot, like a little pit next to the wood and tool shed that had this really fine, chalky ash that we used to play with, because if you tossed it in the air when it was dry, it would literally leave a dust trail in the air and then a circular one as it hit the ground :D That might have been used for watered down fertilzer.

Living in the niagara region and being an outdoorsman has taught me that there is litterally fruit trees and shrubs everywhere . The variety of apples I've found alone and wild grapes along with other fruit trees is insane . If I had an orchard it would deffinetly have apples pawpaws and cherries 😅 maybe some peaches and assorted fruit bushes around them
